Earth Day
Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, brings together millions of people worldwide to advocate for environmental protection and raise awareness about threats like pollution, climate change, and habitat loss. First held in 1970, it helped spark the modern environmental movement and led to landmark legislation including the Clean Air Act and the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Today it serves as both a call to action and a reminder that individual choices — from reducing waste to supporting conservation — can collectively make a meaningful difference for the planet.

This fair is a partnership between the City of South Portland, the South Portland Land Trust, and Dirigo Science Connection.

World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on June 8th to raise awareness about the vital role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth, covering over 70% of the planet's surface and producing more than half of the world's oxygen. The day highlights urgent environmental threats facing our oceans, including plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change-driven issues like rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification. It serves as a global call to action, encouraging individuals, governments, and organizations to take steps to protect and sustainably manage ocean resources for future generations.
